Diagnosis
If you try to open the application on Mac for the first time, it can happen that the Mac OS prevents you from doing so. There is a warning, telling that this application does not come from a licensed developer.

Why do you see this message?
This is a security setting of your Mac. You can change this setting in the system settings (System settings > Security > General), but we advise you to leave it as it is. Apple provides a very simple remedy, and you only need to authorize KIM TimeLog once.

Solution
There is a very simple solution. Close any popups with warnings. Then make a right-click on the application symbol. Choose “Open”. Once again you see the warning, but in this screen you now have an extra button by which you can “Open” the application. Click to open the app, and you’re done. It works exactly the same for any other app which is not directly authorized by Apple.

Diagnosis
KIM TimeLog has been reduced to the max. On purpose we offer only the most basic functions, which is to conveniently track your time and create an overview. For this reason we have not added an address database, and you will not be able to create full customer profiles. If you ever worked with complex job management solutions, in which everything is linked with everything else, you might miss this feature at first. But this is not a hindrance for the simple workflow KIM TimeLog has been designed for.

Solution
The solution is most simple: Use the field “Project” to store a combination of customer name and project name. You could use a short code for the customer and then add the project name.

If you frequently work for the same customers, but for different projects, you can either use the field Project to store the customer name (the customer, so to say, is the main project), while sub-projects are stored in the field Topic. Additionally you can add custom references, – project numbers, booking accounts, etc. – to the field Reference. This should give you plenty of options for a basic structure.

Diagnosis
The basic time unit, as set for a new installation, is 15 minutes. Many freelancer or companies work with fixed time slots when processing jobs. Starting a new time slot will always round the result to the next full time unit.

Solution
You can redefine the time unit as you like. See under “Settings”. If you would like to count just the single minutes, set the time unit to “1” minute. Would you like to split an hour in 10 equal parts, set the time unit to “6” minutes. KIM TimeLog always will round up to the next full time unit. If you would like to change something to any record time slot, you can do so easily by hand.

No, it is not possible to create your invoice directly with KIM TimeLog. KIM TimeLog does not try to replace your existing solutions or workflows. It wants to enhance your current workflow with a few valuable, but very focussed functions. Once you created a number of time slots for a project, you can generate a list any time. With any list you can do two things:

  • Every list can be printed (or saved as PDF – depending on your Operating System) and can be added to your invoice.
  • Every list can be summarized as a simple text, ready to copy to your own invoice or to send as an email.

KIM TimeLog on purpose is limited to basic functions. These however can be used very flexible and can be easily integrated in your existing workflow.

Diagnosis
How can you print a list of times, print a list or export a set of time slots?

Solution
Overviews of any selection can be created under “Time”. There you will find convenient selection criteria to let you create your list with a few clicks. You also can use a search function. Once you created your list, you can print it (or print into a PDF, depending to your Operating System) or export as an Excel list. To print or export click on “Report”. To create  summary which you can copy or send per email, click on “Summary”.

When logging your time you can add a topic to each entry. Topics are automatically extracted from the records you already created. This simplifies re-using the topics you used. If you want to remove a topic from the list, you will have to remove (change) it in the time logging records itself.
